In modern clinics where team treatment is becoming widely accepted, there are greater expectations for and there has been more responsibility placed on pharmacists in order to improve the quality and effectiveness of medical care. Furthermore, through advances in genomic medicine, as genomic drug discovery and tailor-made treatment become reality, the fields of medical treatment and medicine are changing significantly. Aiming to train experts in pharmaceutical products, with high-level specialized knowledge and techniques and broad knowledge of the effects of drugs on the human body as well as solid research skills, we established the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences on the Biwako-Kusatsu Campus in April of 2008.
At the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences we are pursuing high-quality education bolstered by a wealth of research in the natural sciences, and together with the four departments of the concurrently founded College of Life Sciences we are developing integrated and collaborative education and research. In addition, as a college within a comprehensive university which encompasses a number of colleges in the fields of culture, society and the natural sciences, the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences is carrying out pharmaceutical education which makes the utmost use of the university’s resources. For example, in the crossover advanced courses open to third-year students and above, students are able to collaborate with cultural and social science related colleges and graduate schools to acquire medical treatment management knowledge while training from a social and moral perspective on medical treatment; it is a system that allows for many types of learning.
We expect the individuals studying in our newly formed College of Pharmaceutical Sciences to be successful in a number of fields: as experts in pharmaceutical products who will be leaders in team treatment, as pharmacists who will play a central role in community healthcare and as technicians and researchers who will work towards the development of new pharmaceuticals.
