Regarding the Case of Influenza Infection at Ritsumeikan University Biwako Kusatsu Campus

On May 20th one student from Ritsumeikan University Biwako Kusatsu Campus was confirmed to have been infected with Influenza A (H1N1). Based on the requests of local authorities, Ritsumeikan is taking the following measures to prevent against further outbreak:

1. School Closure
Ritsumeikan University will be closed as follows:
1) Period of Closure: Wed. May 20th, 2009 – Tues. May 26th, 2009 (7 days)
2) Locations: Biwako Kusatsu Campus (Otsu city, Shiga Prefecture)
Ritsumeikan Moriyama Junior and Senior High Schools (Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture)

2. Details Regarding School Closures at BKC and Ritsumeikan Moriyama Junior and Senior High Schools
*Services at Kinugasa and Suzaku campuses will continue as regularly scheduled

1) Undergraduate and Graduate Students
① While the school is closed, all undergraduate and graduate students (including research and non-degree seeking students) are asked to remain at home
② As a rule, all students are prohibited from entering BKC campus, and BKC students are prohibited from visiting Kinugasa Campus or any of the other Ritsumeikan campuses
③ Kinugasa Campus students and Suzaku Campus students are prohibited from entering BKC campus
④ Announcements regarding make-up classes will be made separately. In order to stay informed of changes to the situation, please check message boards, the university homepage, and notices by Email

2) Extracurricular Activities and Events
① Please cancel or postpone any extracurricular and club/circle activities
② BKC students are prohibited from taking part in extracurricular activities at Kinugasa Campus
③ Any other events or activities hosted by Ritsumeikan which make use of the facilities at BKC will be cancelled or postponed (including lectures held at Extension Center)
④ Cafeteria services and other business operations will be suspended during this time
⑤ As a rule, the rental of facilities will be cancelled or postponed

3) Actions Taken by Ritsumeikan Moriyama Junior and Senior High Schools
① While the school is closed, students are to remain at home and continue their studies independently
② Commuting to campus is prohibited, and all extracurricular activities have been suspended

3. Detection of flu-like symptoms
If you detect any flu-like symptoms, please avoid going to school until the nature of your symptoms has been determined. Flu-like symptoms include: body temperature above 37.5 degrees Celsius, sore throat, coughing/sneezing, and diarrhea. After consulting with a fever consultation center, please visit a medical institution if deemed necessary.
