2012年が、世界中の人々にとって平和で幸せな年となりますよう、心から祈念申し上げます。

昨年起こった、東日本大震災やそれに伴う福島第一原発事故は日本に大きな惨禍をもたらし、国内のみならず、世界中から多くの支援が寄せられました。被災地から離れた、私たち立命館大学や立命館アジア太平洋大学にも多くの励ましの言葉をいただきました。改めてご支援いただいた皆さまに感謝を申し上げます。
私たちは、震災直後に立命館災害復興支援室を立ち上げ、被災地への学生・教職員ボランティアの派遣、教育・研究を通じた復興支援のあり方を全学で検討し、可能な限り実行して参りました。この営みを、今後5年、10年と息長く続けていく所存です。

一方で、刻一刻と変容する各国の情勢は、私たちに国際社会の連帯の強さ、尊さを教えると同時に、複雑さをも突きつけます。激動する社会において、人類の未来を切りひらく力を持つ若者を送り出す責任を負うものとして、今ほど教育・研究機関の役割が問われている時代はありません。

「Creating a Future,Beyond Borders」。この言葉は、2020年に向けて、私たち立命館学園がめざす姿、学園ビジョンを現しています。様々な問題解決の前にたちはだかる限界や制限を乗り越えて、自らの可能性をひろげ、新たな価値を生みだす。立命館学園に集まる一人ひとりが、この思いを胸に、未来を切りひらく挑戦に、果敢に挑んでくれると信じています。

本年も立命館に対する様々なご支援を賜ることができれば幸いです。皆様のご健康とご活躍をお祈りし、新年のご挨拶とさせていただきます。

Best wishes for a happy and peaceful 2012 to the people of the world.

The Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami that hit last March caused unimaginable damage with widespread devastation to life and property, a catastrophe that was made even worse by the destruction of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and subsequent release of radioactive contamination over a large area. Generous support poured in not only from Japan, but also from around the world. Ritsumeikan University and Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University also received many words of sympathy and encouragement, and I would like to express my deep appreciation to all for their kind thoughts during this most difficult time.
Ritsumeikan was quick to create a Disaster Restoration Support Office to identify critical needs and provide assistance through the dispatch of students and staff to the affected area, and to consider the most effective means of making the university’s strengths in research and education available for the benefit of all. The university has established plans for long-term support that anticipate a five- to ten-year period of time.

Meanwhile, the dramatic changes being faced by countries around the globe remind us of the complexity of the world we live in and the importance of close cooperation among the nations that make up international society; and the great responsibility of the world’s research and educational institutions in cultivating young people capable of meeting the challenges of the future has never been as important as it is now.

“Creating a Future, Beyond Borders” is the vision that drives the goals we hope to achieve by 2020. This vision reflects our desire to expand our potential to create new value beyond the boundaries and limitations that act as obstacles in our efforts to solve the problems we encounter. I believe that all the people at Ritsumeikan will exert their best efforts to create a clear path to the future with this vision as a guiding principle.

I wish you all health, happiness and success in 2012 and look forward to your continued support and cooperation in helping Ritsumeikan realize its goals.
